From fixing the shape of a tooth to improving the color of your smile, veneers are versatile enough to make all kinds of cosmetic corrections. If you’re interested in getting veneers, you should know that they’re typically made from either porcelain or composite. Each material has its advantages, but depending on your circumstances, one might be a better fit for your smile than the other. The information below can help you figure out what kind of veneer you should get.

What are Veneers?

A veneer is essentially a thin shell. Unlike a crown, it only covers the front of your tooth as opposed to the entire structure. Since veneers are able to make multiple kinds of corrections all at once, they are often recommended for patients who want to make more than one kind of change to their smiles.

Advantages of Porcelain Veneers

One of the biggest reasons why some patients favor porcelain veneers over composite ones is their increased durability. As long as a porcelain veneer is properly cared for, it can last for more than 10 or even 15 years before it has to be replaced. (In comparison, composite veneers have an average lifespan of around 5 to 7 years.)

Porcelain veneers are also very natural-looking. The translucent properties of porcelain mean that it can mimic the way natural enamel reflects light. Also, since porcelain is a nonporous material, it does not stain very easily; this can make it a very appealing choice for anyone who had veneers placed to cover discolored spots.

Advantages of Composite Veneers

Compared to porcelain veneers, the process of placing composite veneers is much simpler. Not only can it often be completed in a day, but it’s also less invasive; little to no enamel has to be removed, which means you don’t have to worry about making significant, permanent changes to your natural teeth.

Another benefit of composite veneers is that they tend to cost less on average. This is worth keeping in mind since dental insurance doesn’t usually pay for veneers. Remember, though, that the overall price of your treatment can vary depending on how many veneers you decide to have placed.

Which Should You Choose: Porcelain Veneers or Composite Veneers?

Every patient has different needs, goals, and priorities when having veneers placed, so what’s right for one person may not necessarily be the best choice for another. As such, when it comes to deciding between porcelain veneers and composite veneers, your first step should be to set up a consultation with your dentist; with their insight, you’ll be able to narrow down the type of material that best fits your needs.
