Oral Appliance Therapy

Sleep apnea treatment oral appliance therapy in carrying case

There are two types of sleep apnea. The less common form is known as central sleep apnea. It occurs when the brain fails to trigger the body to inhale and exhale. This is a more complex health concern and requires specialized treatment.

The most common form is obstructive sleep apnea. As the name suggests, this form of apnea occurs when the airway is obstructed during sleep. Traditionally, patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea would undergo treatment using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) systems. Unfortunately, many patients find themselves unable to adapt to CPAP treatment. For these patients, our Annapolis dentistry team may be able to provide a more comfortable, convenient solution – oral appliance therapy. We custom craft oral appliances that shift the jaw forward, placing pressure on the throat muscles in order to keep the airway clear.
